Start with the routine, not the number of copies.
Write down the entrances the household actually uses. A front door may be used for visitors while an ordinary garage-entry door does most of the daily work. Check which keys already belong to each door without forcing a stiff or damaged lock.
Then think about the people involved. Who needs a regular key? Who might need a spare with permission? Is someone keeping an old copy that should no longer work? If the question is who still has access, rekeying may belong in the plan before more copies are made.
Make the spare reachable without making it obvious.
Choose a secure arrangement with someone authorized to help. Avoid an exposed hiding place or a label that gives a finder the property address. Make sure the people who may need the spare understand the arrangement and can contact the right person.
For a car, a spare inside the locked vehicle may be unavailable at the very moment it is needed. Keep the household decision separate from the vehicle compatibility check. Say whether a working key remains when asking about another one.
Include the ordinary stops in your day.
A trip through the village shops, a walk near Lake Peachtree and an afternoon at Kedron can put keys in a different bag or pocket. You do not need a complicated system. A consistent place for the keys and a clear agreement about the spare are easier to keep up.
If a key is already missing, explain whether the loss involves the house, the car or both. A working car key, a home lock change and a moving garage-door repair are separate requests, even when they interrupt the same afternoon.
Review it when the household changes.
A move, a new driver or a change in who regularly visits can make an old arrangement less useful. Revisit who carries a key, who keeps a spare and which copies should still work. For rented property, involve the owner or manager before altering locks.
You can bring a short list to the first conversation. It helps explain the desired result without deciding in advance that every lock needs replacing.
